Hitting the Wall

The Ranch - Black Hills Underground

The reason Wall, SD is called Wall is because the town literally lies along the route West where the Badlands formed a formidable Wall to the early settlers. Today, the town of Wall is, for all intents and purposes, the famous Wall Drug Store - a true testament to Capitalism and The American Way. How this little bitty drug store created the world-famous Wall Drug billboards and bumper stickers from the simple concept of "free ice water" is reason enough to visit. If you can't make the trip, read their story in cyberspace at (where else?) www.walldrug.com!

So after you've read the story, you see that it's just a typical tourist trap. But after countless hours in the car looking at nothing, who wouldn't stop?

This is one of my favorite shots. (I try to shoot pics of my feet in new and interesting places..) Besides 100's of pairs of cowboy boots, they also had almost as many hats, spurs, belts, and some of them thar fancy shirts!

The huge Wall Drug "mall" has grown over the years until now it's almost the whole main drag. I found this little chapel wedged in-between two other shops. The little gold plaque reflected my flash, it simply said, "welcome travellers."

Where else can you find hundreds of the rare and elusive Jackelope? And only $48.95! Such a DEAL! :)
