- "The camera ALWAYS lies" - Don't believe the old addage, by it's nature, photography changes the 3D world into 2D. It has to distort reality, so the key is to be in control of the distortion. Photography also can focus on the good things and omit the not-so-good - therefore it is editorial and subjective. The goal of advertising photogaphy is to GENERATE LEADS! You are not a journalist, you're a salesman. Improve your listing presentation by talking about the importance of photography and how you know the "secrets." It works!
- Sometimes the only difference between professional and amateur photography is just how many shots get taken... DONT'T BE LAZY WITH YOUR CAMERA! Get out of the car, get into the back yard, try a few inside shots, go AROUND the house to discover better angles. This is the internet and information age - the simple photo you shoot of a listing will be the most powerful piece of marketing and the most widely distributed. Sell the house in one photo!!! Better yet 4!
- OK - I'll stop here for now since this is SUPPOSED to be a lab! :)
--------------OK - After the pep-talk I just gave you, here's your assignment. Pick a listing of yours that sold a couple months ago - one that you still have a photo in the file. Make sure it is not far away.
Before you shoot - here's my primer on how to shoot: mnrealty.com/magazine/education/photography/intro.htm
Your assignment is to do a "makeover" and reshoot the house as a "professional" marketing photographer. Look for the best angles and features of the home. Get out and explore those angles. Shoot 2 photos - 1 Front and 1 Other. Extra credit if you shoot an interior photo too. (Ask the owner for a referral! :) Assignment hint: Your teacher "hates" straight-on front shots of houses!
Now - compare the new shots with your old orignal photo. Which marketing company would your hire if you were selling the home....? ;)Tally Ho!
